The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds

Wells's first two scientific romances. The Time Machine (1895) travels to the year 802,701 and finds humanity divided into the Eloi and the Morlocks; The War of the Worlds (1898) brings the Martians down on Woking, Surrey, and follows one man on foot across a beaten England. Both are short, both were written before he was thirty-two, and neither has been out of print since. Ninety-nine plates of stormy seas and volcanic light by Turner, Martin and their contemporaries run through both romances, matching the upheaval of the year 802,701 and the Martian descent.
