Michel and Angele

France and Jersey under Catherine de' Medici: a Huguenot flees the massacre, an English queen's court receives him, and a Catholic agent follows with a warrant and a grudge. Parker was Canadian-born, settled in England, sat in Parliament for eighteen years and was knighted; his historical work is better than his reputation, and the Channel Islands here are drawn from the ground. Fifty plates, from Brueghel to Munch, trace the sea crossings, courts and sieges that carry the story from France to the Channel Islands.
