Brick and Marble in the Middle Ages

The brick and marble architecture of northern Italy studied on the spot by the architect who built the Law Courts in the Strand. Street travelled with a sketchbook in the early 1850s, measured what he drew, and argued that the Italian gothic had lessons England had missed. The book changed English building for a generation, and the drawings are his own. Fifty-nine plates of paintings by Canaletto and Corot, among others, show the northern Italian cities Street studied, from 1723 to 1862.
