Three English art students in Paris, a tone-deaf Irish girl who models for them, and the musician who hypnotises her into a great singer. Du Maurier invented Svengali here and the book was the publishing sensation of the 1890s; the trilby hat is named after the heroine. This edition is bound with sixty plates of painting from 1850 to 1900, among them works by Jean Béraud, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Dutzschold.
