Greek Lands and Letters

Greece as it was walked and as it was written: Athens, Delphi, Olympia and the islands, with the poets and historians quoted where they belong on the ground. Francis Allinson and his wife travelled the country and taught its literature. The book was written for readers who would never see the places, and it is the best of the pre-war literary guides. Sixty paintings by Frederic Leighton and Claude Lorrain, from harbour dawns to fallen trees, give the Greek scene the same light the text gives its poets.
