William J Farrer and the Results of his Work

This is a biography written by Frederick Guthrie, who was a chemist at the New South Wales Department of Agriculture and professor of chemistry at the University of Sydney.
William Farrer, a Guthrie's colleague, researched the development of wheat breeds resistant to disease (especially rust) and tough Australian conditions, as well as producing high yields. His most important achievement was the breeding and creation of 'Federation' wheat. His achievements expanded wheat growing areas, especially in New South Wales, and led Australia to become a world leader in wheat exports.
