His Family

An ageing New Yorker watches his three daughters take three different roads into the new century — one into a marriage and children, one into teaching in the tenements, one into fashionable society — and understands that his own life will continue only in them. Poole worked in Chicago settlement houses, reported the 1905 revolution from Russia, and won the first Pulitzer Prize for the Novel for this in 1918. Fifty-six plates by painters including Albert Bierstadt and George Inness, all from 1835 to 1894, carry the American landscape of mountains, coasts and farmland that frames the family's story.
