Basque Legends

Basque tales gathered by an English chaplain at Saint-Jean-de-Luz who learned the language: the tartaro, the heren-suge with seven heads, the lady of the fairy hill, and legends the Basques share with nobody. Webster printed the Basque texts beside the English and noted who told him each. The stories are the strangest in western Europe, which is the point his notes make. Sixty plates range from Cimabue and Simone Martini to Waterhouse, their saints, madonnas and mythic figures echoing the old legends printed beside them.
