What Katy Did at School

Katy and Clover are sent to a boarding school run on rules that forbid talking to the boys' college across the road, and organise a society for the suppression of unlady-like behaviour that is mostly an excuse for a feast. Susan Coolidge had gone to just such a school in Hanover and wrote it in 1873 from the inside. The invalid of the first book is now the one who mends other people. Forty-nine plates by painters including George Inness and Childe Hassam follow the school year through gardens, rivers, and mountain light, the American landscape that shaped the world Katy and Clover came from.
