A Reading Book in Irish History

Complete and unabridged, with 35 full-page plates by William Gibbes Mackenzie, Nathaniel Hone the Younger and Joseph Malachy Kavanagh. Ireland from the coming of the Gael to the Norman invasion, told for children by the man who wrote the standard social history of ancient Ireland. P. W. Joyce was a schools inspector and a scholar of Irish place-names, and he keeps legend and record clearly apart. The chapters on the monastic schools and on Brian Boru are the fullest. Thirty-five plates by painters including James Arthur O'Connor and Nathaniel Hone the Younger carry the Irish landscape, coast and legend that fill these chapters, from moonlight to Saint Bride.
