Friend Mac Donald

Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by John Constable, David Wilkie and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. A Frenchman's account of the Scots: their kirk, their thrift, their Sundays, their humour and their conviction that they are the most reasonable people alive. Max O'Rell had made his name mocking the English in the same way, and turned north for the sequel in 1887. The affection is genuine and the jokes are sharp enough that the Scots bought it in quantity. Sixty plates of painting by David Wilkie and John Atkinson Grimshaw, from 1804 to 1910, catch the northern street, hearth and Sunday light of the century O'Rell was writing about.
