Napoleon and Blücher

1812–14 from the German side: Prussia rising after Jena, Blücher old and swearing and unkillable, Napoleon at Leipzig and at Fontainebleau, and the courts, spies and queens in between. Mühlbach was Klara Mundt, who wrote nearly three hundred volumes and poured the courts of Europe into them; she wrote this for Germans who remembered the occupation, and Blücher is the hero — which is the whole point of view. Fifty-eight plates, from Friedrich's solitary trees and northern springs to Vernet's flat countrysides, carry the northern weather of the campaign the novel describes.
