The Rebellion in the Cevennes (Vol. 1&2) (Annotated)

Ludwig Tieck's The Rebellion in the Cevennes (Vols. 1–2) reconstructs the Camisard uprising of early-eighteenth-century southern France, when persecuted Protestants resisted royal and Catholic authority after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Blending historical chronicle with Romantic inwardness, Tieck renders fanaticism, martyrdom, political necessity, and private conscience through grave dialogue and carefully staged scenes. The novel belongs to the European historical fiction flourishing after Walter Scott, yet its emphasis on spiritual conflict and ambiguity is distinctly German Romantic. Tieck (1773–1853), one of the central figures of German Romanticism, was a poet, dramatist, translator, critic, and master of the Kunstmärchen. His lifelong fascination with legend, faith, theatricality, and the unstable boundary between imagination and history informs this work. Written in his mature period, the novel reflects both his Protestant cultural inheritance and his skepticism toward absolutist claims, whether religious or political. Readers interested in historical novels that treat rebellion not as spectacle but as moral crisis will find this work rewarding. It is especially recommended to students of Romanticism, religious conflict, and European political memory. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience.- A succinct Introduction situates the work's timeless appeal and themes.- The Synopsis outlines the central plot, highlighting key developments without spoiling critical twists.- A detailed Historical Context immerses you in the era's events and influences that shaped the writing.- A thorough Analysis dissects symbols, motifs, and character arcs to unearth underlying meanings.- Reflection questions prompt you to engage personally with the work's messages, connecting them to modern life.- Hand‐picked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance.- Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.
