Legends of Babylon and Egypt in Relation to Hebrew Tradition

The creation and flood stories of Babylon and Egypt set beside the opening chapters of Genesis, at a time when the tablets from Nineveh had just been read. L. W. King was an Assyriologist at the British Museum and wrote these Schweich Lectures for readers who wanted the evidence rather than the controversy. He is careful about what the parallels prove and what they do not, and the care is the reason the book still holds. Sixty plates of painting, among them Francis Danby and Max Slevogt, follow the Nile, the pyramids and the Deluge from 1512 to 1914.
