Complete and unabridged, with 52 full-page plates by David Kleyne, Charles Brooking and Thomas Luny. A Swiss pastor, his wife and four sons are wrecked on an island supplied with every useful animal and plant in the world regardless of geography, and set about improving it. Wyss wrote it to teach his own sons husbandry and self-reliance; his son edited it and the zoology has bothered naturalists ever since. Fifty-two plates of shipping scenes, shipwrecks and Dutch whalers by painters including Frances Williams and Thomas Baines give the castaway tale the maritime world it belongs to.
