Rollo in Scotland

Rollo, aged twelve, travels through Scotland with his uncle — Glasgow, the Clyde, Loch Lomond, the Trossachs — and is taught how to look at a country and how to behave in it. Jacob Abbott wrote nearly two hundred books for children and made the Rollo series a school of observation. The uncle's method is to answer every question with another and to let the boy be wrong first. Fifty-one plates after Turner, Millais and their contemporaries follow the same road, from stormy paddle-steamers and mail coaches to Highland lochs and a scene from The Abbot.
