Children of the Ghetto

The Jewish East End of London in the 1890s - the sweatshops, the synagogues, the arranged marriages and the children pulling away from all of it. Zangwill was commissioned to write it by an American Jewish publishing society and produced one of the first serious novels of immigrant life in English. This edition carries fifty-seven plates of painting bound with the text, among them works by William Logsdail, Théophile Steinlen and Beatrice Whistler, dating from 1748 to 1929.
