The Story of Magellan and the Discovery of the Philippines

Magellan's voyage told for young readers: the mutinies off Patagonia, the strait, the four months of starvation on the Pacific, the islands, and the fight in the shallows where he was killed. Butterworth wrote a shelf of "Zigzag Journeys" for American children and knew how to keep a fleet moving. The eighteen men who came home in the Victoria get the last chapter they deserve. Forty-three paintings of storm, shipwreck and far harbours, among them Aivazovsky and Hodges, follow the fleet across four centuries of seafaring art.
