The Boys' and Girls' Herodotus

Complete and unabridged, with 22 full-page plates by John Martin, Claude Lorrain and Giovanni Paolo Panini. Herodotus for young readers: Croesus and Solon, the Egyptian priests, Darius, Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis — the storyteller kept and the digressions pruned. John S. White made this abridgement in the 1880s for American schools. Herodotus survives the cutting better than most ancients because his method was anecdote in the first place. Twenty-two plates range from Claude Lorrain's Harbour at Sunrise to John Martin's Tower of Babel, matching the ancient world's sweep.
