Lilith

A young man follows a raven through a mirror in his own library into a region where the dead sleep in a chamber of beds and a woman with a spot on her side will not lie down among them. MacDonald wrote "Lilith" at the very end of his life, revising it eight times, and his family thought it had come to him rather than been composed. It is the least explained of his books and the one his admirers, Lewis and Auden among them, went back to. Sixty plates by painters including László Mednyánszky and Giuseppe Abbati gather ravens, mirrors, churchyards and scholars, the exact furniture of MacDonald's dream.
