The House with the Green Shutters

A Scottish village, a bully who has made money from carting, and the son who cannot carry what his father built. Douglas Brown wrote it in fury at the sentimental kailyard school and died the year after it appeared, at thirty-three; it changed the course of the Scottish novel. This edition includes a gallery of 58 plates of paintings bound with the book, among them works by Edvard Munch, Emanuel Leutze and Jens Birkholm.
