The Captain of the Wight

A boy in the household of the Captain of the Isle of Wight in the last years of the Wars of the Roses learns arms, seamanship and the price of loyalty to a losing side. Frank Cowper was a yachtsman and antiquary who knew the Solent and the period's shipping. The raid on the French coast and the sea-fight are done by someone who had sailed those waters in small boats. Fifty plates after Turner, Leighton and others follow coastlines, storms and castle walls from Windsor to the Aegean, the same sea-haunted world the boy learns to sail.
