Makers of Many Things

Where everyday things come from: matches, rubber, gloves, paper, books, pens and pencils, dishes, watches, shoes, cotton and silk, traced from raw material to shop counter. Eva March Tappan wrote it for schools in 1916, when most of these processes were still visible in small factories. The chapters read as industrial history now, which was not the intention and is the reason to keep it. Sixty paintings by Menzel, Eakins and others, from a moonlit Berlin canal to a studio wall, show the made world of the nineteenth century that Tappan's factories belonged to.
