Bob, Son of Battle

Two sheepdogs and two men in the North Country fells, where the Shepherds' Trophy is won three years running and a killer is loose among the flocks by night. Ollivant wrote it flat on his back after a riding accident, and it was published in America as "Bob, Son of Battle" because the English title, "Owd Bob", meant nothing there. The dialect is thick and the ending is not the one the reader spends the book expecting. Twenty-three plates by painters including John Constable and George Clausen follow the fells, farms and flocks of the North Country from 1814 to 1923.
