The Wondrous Sickle, and Other Stories

Complete and unabridged, with 57 full-page plates by Jules Breton, Jean-François Millet and John Everett Millais. Stories of Christian India by a missionary who lived at Batala in the Punjab: a village registrar who takes no bribes, a merchant on the Delhi road, a sickle that is worth more than it looks. Charlotte Tucker wrote as "A. L. O. E." — A Lady of England — and went out to India at fifty-four, never to return. The tales are frankly evangelical and unusually exact about caste, village office and what a convert's life cost. Fifty-seven harvest and gleaning scenes by painters including Millet and Breton, dating 1826 to 1896, echo the field labour of these Punjab tales.
