Ellen G. White's The Great Controversy presents a sweeping theological history of the conflict between Christ and Satan, moving from the destruction of Jerusalem through the Protestant Reformation and onward to apocalyptic expectations of judgment, Sabbath restoration, and the Second Advent. Written in an elevated, prophetic, and often urgent prose style, the book belongs to the nineteenth-century Protestant tradition of historicist interpretation, yet it is distinctively shaped by Seventh-day Adventist convictions about scripture, history, and eschatology. White, a formative co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, wrote from within the aftermath of the Millerite movement and the "Great Disappointment" of 1844, experiences that profoundly influenced Adventist identity. Her claimed visionary experiences, pastoral concern, and commitment to biblical interpretation informed a vast body of religious writing. In this work, she sought not merely to recount history but to disclose its spiritual meaning within a cosmic moral drama. This book is recommended for readers interested in Adventist theology, Protestant apocalyptic thought, and religious interpretations of history.
