Hopes and Fears

A spinster heiress takes charge of the orphaned children of the man she once loved and discover that good intentions are not the same as good judgement. Yonge wrote this kind of household with more honesty about its failures than any of her imitators. This edition carries fifty-seven plates after Edward Hicks, Arthur Hughes and Rebecca Dulcibella Orpen, among others, and two restored and coloured illustrations.
