Rasputin and the Russian Revolution

In *Rasputin and the Russian Revolution*, Catherine Radziwill combines political reminiscence, court gossip, and historical interpretation to examine the final years of Romanov rule. Centering on Grigori Rasputin's extraordinary access to the imperial family, the book presents him not merely as a religious adventurer but as a symptom of the corruption, factionalism, and spiritual anxiety surrounding the Russian court. Its style is vivid, partisan, and anecdotal, reflecting the tradition of aristocratic memoir and journalistic exposé rather than detached academic historiography. Written in the immediate aftermath of the revolutionary upheaval, it belongs to the early literature attempting to explain how autocracy, scandal, and social discontent converged in 1917. Radziwill—born Princess Catherine Radziwill and connected by marriage and social position to Europe's aristocratic circles—wrote with an insider's sense of dynastic politics and elite culture. Her proximity to high society informed her attention to personalities, private influence, and courtly intrigue, while her experience as a prolific memoirist and commentator encouraged a dramatic, interpretive narrative. The book consequently reveals as much about contemporary perceptions of the Romanovs and Rasputin as it does about the events themselves. This volume will interest readers of Russian imperial history, revolutionary studies, and political biography. It is especially valuable when read critically, alongside modern scholarship, as a compelling primary witness to the myths, fears, and explanations that shaped the first interpretations of the Russian Revolution.
