The Lady with the Dog and Other Stories

Chekhov's late manner — the story that seems to end before anything has been decided — at its most complete. The Lady with the Dog, an adultery that turns without warning into the only real thing in two lives; Kashtanka, a lost dog's year among circus animals, told entirely from the height of a dog; and The Darling, a woman who has no opinions except the opinions of whoever she loves. The volume gathers three of his collections in Constance Garnett's translations. Ninety-seven plates by painters including Lovis Corinth and Albert Bierstadt carry the lakes, mountains and changing light that answer Chekhov's quiet, unresolved weather.
