The Complete Works of Anna Buchan gathers the fiction of the Scottish novelist better known as O. Douglas, whose novels and sketches turn domestic life into a field of moral, social, and spiritual inquiry. Written in a lucid, affectionate, and quietly humorous style, these works portray families, villages, gardens, drawing rooms, and journeys with an eye for emotional nuance rather than melodrama. Set largely in Scotland and northern England, they belong to the early twentieth-century tradition of gentle realism, yet they also register the disruptions of modernity, war, class change, and women's expanding inner lives. Anna Buchan (1877–1948), sister of the novelist and statesman John Buchan, grew up in a cultivated Presbyterian household that shaped her ethical seriousness and love of place. Her life in Peeblesshire, her close observation of family networks, and her experience of a changing Britain informed the warmth and restraint of her fiction. Writing as O. Douglas, she developed a distinctive voice: modest in manner, but acute in its understanding of loneliness, duty, faith, and consolation.
