Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie

In *Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie*, the steel magnate recounts his journey from impoverished Scottish immigrant to one of America's most powerful industrialists. Combining personal narrative, economic reflection, and moral argument, Carnegie presents business achievement as the result of discipline, technological progress, cooperation, and strategic opportunity. The work belongs to the nineteenth-century tradition of the self-made-man narrative, yet it also anticipates modern corporate memoir: its confident, selective storytelling transforms a life shaped by labor exploitation, industrial concentration, and immense wealth into a lesson in social responsibility. His account is therefore both historical testimony and an exercise in self-fashioning, especially when read alongside his doctrine that the wealthy must redistribute their fortunes for public benefit. Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1835, Carnegie immigrated with his family to the United States, entered the telegraph and railroad industries, and ultimately built the Carnegie Steel Company. These experiences informed his faith in education, libraries, technological innovation, and the ethical obligations of capital. Written near the end of his life and published posthumously in 1920, the autobiography reflects both his remarkable ascent and his determination to shape its moral interpretation amid mounting criticism of industrial inequality. This book is recommended to readers interested in American economic history, immigrant experience, philanthropy, and the rhetoric of success. It should be read critically, not simply as a celebration of enterprise, but as an illuminating document through which a Gilded Age titan explains—and seeks to justify—the world he helped create.
