The Story of Rolf and the Viking's Bow

Complete and unabridged, with 57 full-page plates by Vilhelm Arnesen, Peder Severin Krøyer and Michael Ancher. An Iceland of the sagas: a boy is outlawed with his father over a disputed judgement, and must win the family land back by law and by the bow. Allen French wrote it in 1904 from the Icelandic sources and kept the saga temper — the feuds are settled at the Thing as often as by weapons. It is the best English retelling of saga law for young readers. Fifty-seven plates of northern light and Norse myth, from Caspar David Friedrich to Carl Bøgh, give the saga's storms, manors and quarrels their true weather.
