The novel opens with a description of the painful parting of a very young married couple, Leon and Verna, who are 21 and 17. Verna is the daughter of a wealthy family. Leon is not from the same background. Verna's family have cut her off because they do not approve of her marriage to the poor music teacher, Leon.
