This novel is written in the first person, a young girl living in the house of an uncle. She is not badly treated, and is adequately provided for, but lacks companionship, stimulation, and any other kind of life outside the house. One day, Richard Vandermarck, a handsome young man, is employed by her uncle and, as a result, comes frequently to the house. Here begins a much more interesting chapter in the young girl's life.
