Charity and Its Fruits (Annotated)

Charity and Its Fruits presents Jonathan Edwards's searching exposition of 1 Corinthians 13, unfolding Christian love as the essential evidence and animating principle of true religion. Originally delivered as a series of sermons in 1738, the work combines doctrinal precision, pastoral urgency, and moral psychology. Edwards moves from theological definition to practical application, showing how charity governs humility, forgiveness, peace, and perseverance. Its style is characteristically Puritan: rigorous, scriptural, analytical, yet warmed by an intense vision of divine beauty. Edwards, the foremost theologian of eighteenth-century New England, wrote from within the spiritual ferment of the Great Awakening and the pastoral challenges of Northampton. Trained in Reformed theology and deeply influenced by Scripture, philosophy, and revival experience, he was concerned to distinguish authentic grace from mere religious excitement. This concern shaped his emphasis on holy affections and visible Christian virtue, making Charity and Its Fruits a companion in spirit to his later writings on religious experience. Readers interested in theology, ethics, devotional literature, or early American religious thought will find this book indispensable.
