Climbing on the Himalaya and Other Mountain Ranges

Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by William John Huggins, Ludolf Bakhuizen and Johannes Vingboons. Climbs in the Himalaya, the Alps, the Canadian Rockies, the Lofotens and Skye by the chemist who worked with Ramsay on the noble gases and went with Mummery to Nanga Parbat in 1895 — the first attempt on an eight-thousand-metre peak, which Mummery did not survive. Collie made the first neon lamp in his laboratory and first ascents in his holidays, and writes about both with the same dry precision. Fifty-eight plates range from Friedrich and Vereshchagin to Compton, gathering four centuries of mountain painting into a climber's book.
