The Wild Irish Girl

Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by John Everett Millais, Eduard Hau and Edvard Munch. An English lord's son is sent to the family's Irish estate in disgrace and falls in love with the daughter of the prince his ancestors dispossessed. Lady Morgan published it in 1806, was denounced as seditious, and gave Ireland its first national novel; the wild Irish girl herself became a costume women wore. Fifty-eight plates, among them works by Edvard Munch and Thomas Fearnley, gather coastal, workshop and interior scenes from 1771 to 1915 that echo the novel's own crossing of land, labour and upheaval.
