Über John O’Connor
John O’Connor was born in Dingle with the harbour at his back door. At the age of sixteen he began an apprenticeship in boatbuilding at the Dingle Boatyard. Two years after qualifying as a shipwright, he went to teacher-training college and qualified as a woodwork teacher. After a year teaching at second level, he secured a position as a lecturer in Trade Subjects/ Boatbuilding in what is now the Institute of Technology in Tralee.
In 1987, with the aid of students from the college (IT Tralee) and local friends, he oversaw the building of the first dinghies used by Cumann Bádóirí Naomh Bhréanainn (Dingle Sailing Club), which he founded. He was the club’s first commodore. He was also involved in setting up the Dingle Marina Centre and the twinning of Dingle Sailing Club with the National Yacht Club, Dún Laoghaire, in 1993, a partnership which led to the establishment of the bi-annual Dingle to Dún Laoghaire yacht race.
John is a keen sailor, a cabinetmaker, a published author (of a college text book, Geometrical Drawing for Carpentry & Joinery, 2009) and is planning his next book: a volume on handcrafted traditional and modern furniture.
