The author of "The Checkers," James Runciman, an English teacher, author, and journalist aimed to give a series of pictures that will set forth every phase of public-house life. In this work, the author exposes the ugly sides of the subject, which aren't usually covered directly in the press. Thanks to his truthfulness and talent, "The Checkers" became one of the three social novels that made Runciman famous as a vigorous and versatile author on social and ethical topics.
