The Army Mule, and Other War Sketches

The Civil War from the quartermaster's end of it - the mule, the sutler, the march, the men who did the carrying. Castle enlisted at nineteen, was captured and held in a Confederate prison, and wrote these sketches long afterwards without any of the usual gallantry. This edition binds 57 plates with the text, among them paintings by Géricault, Bonheur and Bierstadt, alongside seven illustrations restored and coloured.
