A History of English Prose Fiction

Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by William Quiller Orchardson, William Powell Frith and John Everett Millais. The English novel traced from the Anglo-Saxon romances to Scott, written in 1882 when the subject was barely considered fit for study. Tuckerman was a Boston man of letters who wrote lives of Lafayette and Peter Stuyvesant; the interest here is the vantage — a Victorian looking back and deciding, book by book, which of them would last. Sixty plates after Hogarth and Millais, from a tiger at ease to a woman in Turkish dress, trace the same three centuries of English life the novel grew up in.
