'Gold Out of Celebes' is a novel written by Aylward Edward Dingle. The story begins by introducing us to Jack Barry, an American sailor, who has been spending time in Batavia looking for a job as a mate or a master. He feels frustrated because the Consulate is not helping him secure a job and the market for sailors is limited. He's standing on the quay and feeling discouraged when he meets a man named Tom Little, who's a former typewriter salesman. Little sees Barry as a strong, capable man and tells him he needs someone like him to help with a new opportunity that he thinks will be profitable.
